Michael Stonebraker leads the Ingres project, a pioneering relational database system, which serves as a predecessor and intellectual stepping stone to POSTGRES.

Significance

Established Berkeley as a major hub for database research and provided the foundational experience from which Stonebraker would later identify the limitations of pure relational models.
