Initial Development Begins

Michael Widenius began developing MySQL, initially named 'My SQL,' as a lightweight, faster alternative to mSQL for internal use at TcX DataKonsult AB.

Significance

This marked the very beginning of MySQL, born out of a practical need for a more efficient database for web applications.
