Initial IMAP Authentication Discussions
John G. Myers, while deeply involved in the evolution of IMAP, recognized the need for a generic authentication framework separate from the application protocol itself. Early discussions within the IMAP working group laid the groundwork for SASL.
Significance
These discussions were the crucible where the core idea of a flexible, pluggable authentication layer first took shape, leading directly to the SASL concept.
