Inspired by the limitations of existing Hadoop storage layers, Mike Percy and Todd Lipcon began leading an internal project at Cloudera to build a new storage engine codenamed 'Impaler,' designed for both fast analytics and fast updates.

Significance

This marked the nascent stage of Kudu, an ambitious attempt to solve a fundamental architectural challenge in the big data ecosystem, setting the stage for its future public release.
