Internal Development of GraphQL Begins

Faced with growing pains in mobile data fetching for their increasingly complex native applications, Facebook engineers Nick Schrock and Lee Byron began developing a new query language internally to address the inefficiencies of traditional REST APIs.

Significance

This marks the genesis of GraphQL, born out of a critical need for a more flexible and efficient data layer to power Facebook's rapidly expanding mobile ecosystem.
