Around 2012, engineers at Cloudera began conceptualizing and prototyping a new storage layer, internally known as 'K-Store' or 'Impala Storage Layer,' to address the limitations of existing Hadoop storage for mutable analytical workloads.

Significance

This marked the foundational conceptualization of Kudu, laying the groundwork for a hybrid transactional/analytical storage system.
