Engineers at Cloudera, including Todd Lipcon and Mike Percy, began prototyping a new storage engine to address the 'sweet spot' problem of combining fast analytics with fast updates.

Significance

This marked the clandestine genesis of Kudu, born out of a critical need observed directly from customer challenges with existing Hadoop technologies.
