Introduced annotations and the Annotation Processing Tool (APT) to the Java ecosystem, providing the fundamental mechanism that Lombok would later leverage.

Significance

Without Java 5's APT, Lombok's compile-time code generation would not have been possible. It laid the technical foundation for Lombok's innovative approach.
