Jeff Bezos's 2002 Mandate

Jeff Bezos issued a company-wide mandate stating that all teams must expose their data and functionality via service interfaces, and communicate only through these interfaces. This forced Amazon to adopt a service-oriented architecture internally.

Significance

This internal transformation was the conceptual blueprint for AWS. It compelled Amazon's engineering culture to think in terms of modular, API-driven services, laying the foundation for what would later be productized and offered to external customers.
