Jeff Bezos's 'API Mandate'
Jeff Bezos issued a company-wide mandate: all teams must expose their data and functionality through service interfaces, communicate only via these interfaces, and design them for external consumption. Non-compliance meant termination.
Significance
This radical internal directive forced Amazon to re-architect itself into a collection of loosely-coupled, highly-scalable services, inadvertently building the core capabilities that would later become AWS. It was the conceptual blueprint for cloud computing.
