Jeff Bezos's API Mandate

Jeff Bezos issued a company-wide mandate stating that all teams must expose their data and functionality through service interfaces, and all teams must communicate only via these interfaces. There were no exceptions.

Significance

This internal directive forced Amazon to adopt a true service-oriented architecture, fundamentally transforming its internal systems and inadvertently creating the modular building blocks that would later become AWS services like S3.
