Kerberos Protocol Release

Developed as part of MIT's Project Athena, Kerberos provided a robust, single sign-on (SSO) solution for network services using secret-key cryptography, authenticating users to services without transmitting passwords in the clear.

Significance

Kerberos was one of the earliest widely adopted network authentication protocols, proving the concept of centralized authentication and secure credential management within a trusted domain. It became foundational for Windows Active Directory.
