Kitware Inc. was founded by six researchers from GE Research, including Ken Martin and Bill Hoffman, with a focus on open-source software for scientific computing.

Significance

The founding of Kitware directly led to the development of major open-source projects like VTK and ITK, whose cross-platform build challenges were the direct impetus for CMake's creation.
