Launch of Amazon S3

Amazon Web Services launched Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), offering object storage over the web. This was one of the very first public AWS services, demonstrating Amazon's externalization of its internal infrastructure capabilities.

Significance

S3 marked the formal beginning of AWS, validating the utility computing model and setting the stage for more complex infrastructure services like EC2 and, eventually, Auto Scaling.
