Launch of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

AWS launched Amazon VPC, providing logically isolated sections of the AWS cloud where customers could launch AWS resources into a virtual network they defined. This critical service included the foundational VPN connectivity from day one.

Significance

This was the bedrock for AWS Site-to-Site VPN. Without VPC, the concept of a secure, dedicated connection to a customer's isolated cloud environment wouldn't exist. It marked AWS's serious push into enterprise-grade networking and hybrid cloud capabilities.
