Lyft open-sources Envoy Proxy

Matt Klein announced the open-sourcing of Envoy Proxy, a high-performance C++ distributed proxy designed for microservices. It was battle-tested at Lyft.

Significance

Envoy provided the crucial, performant, and extensible data plane that Istio would later adopt, eliminating the need for Istio's creators to build a proxy from scratch and accelerating its development.
