MaxCompute (ODPS) Internal Development Begins

Alibaba Group begins developing its proprietary distributed computing platform, originally known as Open Data Processing Service (ODPS), later renamed MaxCompute, to cope with its rapidly escalating internal data processing needs for e-commerce.

Significance

This internal project laid the foundational technology stack upon which DataWorks would eventually provide its orchestration and governance capabilities, proving Alibaba's ability to handle extreme data scale.
