Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) Release
MSDE was a free, redistributable version of the SQL Server 7.0 database engine, primarily intended for small-scale applications and local data storage. It served as a direct precursor to SQL Server Express.
Significance
MSDE demonstrated Microsoft's early recognition of the need for a free, small-footprint database. However, its notoriously difficult installation process and lack of a graphical management tool made it less popular, laying the groundwork for the improved user experience of Express.
