Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Release

This release included the first version of the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), a free, redistributable version of the database, laying the groundwork for a lighter SQL Server.

Significance

MSDE 1.0 was the conceptual predecessor to SQL Server Express, demonstrating Microsoft's early attempt to provide a free database component, albeit one with significant limitations.
