MIT Project Athena Launches
Project Athena was a collaborative effort at MIT to integrate computing into the university's curriculum. It became a crucible for many foundational distributed computing technologies, including the Kerberos authentication system.
Significance
Kerberos, born out of Project Athena, provided a robust, single sign-on authentication solution for a large, distributed environment, demonstrating the feasibility and necessity of centralized authentication long before commercial IAM solutions emerged.
