Multics Operating System Development

The Multics (Multiplexed Information and Computing Service) project, a joint effort by MIT, Bell Labs, and General Electric, pioneered many concepts foundational to modern operating systems, including structured interfaces for system services.

Significance

Though not called 'APIs' at the time, Multics established principles of modularity and well-defined interfaces for operating system components, influencing Unix and subsequent OS development.
