Jim Hugunin released Numeric (originally called Numerical Python), introducing efficient multi-dimensional arrays and linear algebra operations to Python.

Significance

This marked the first serious attempt to make Python viable for numerical computing, laying the conceptual groundwork for all subsequent array libraries.
