Project Florence Inception

Internally, Microsoft's database group began work on 'Project Florence,' an ambitious effort to build a next-generation distributed database service from the ground up to address the scaling and availability needs of large internal services.

Significance

This marked the very beginning of what would become Cosmos DB, establishing the foundational research and development principles for a globally distributed, highly performant database.
