Project Inception

Around 2007-2008, a small team within Google began work on what would become Spanner, aiming to address the limitations of existing database solutions for Google's growing global services.

Significance

This marked the initial strategic decision by Google to invest in building a fundamentally new type of globally distributed, strongly consistent database system.
