A small, focused team at Cloudera, led by visionaries like Mike Percy and Todd Lipcon, began to secretly sketch out the design for a brand-new distributed storage engine. Their mission was to address the critical limitations of existing Hadoop storage solutions, HDFS and HBase, particularly for workloads requiring fast analytics on mutable data.
