Project MAC and Timesharing

MIT's Project MAC (Multiple Access Computer and Machine Aided Cognition) pioneered timesharing systems, allowing multiple users to simultaneously access a central computer's resources and storage.

Significance

Demonstrated the feasibility of shared computing resources and remote access, a conceptual precursor to cloud computing.
