Project Reactor's inception

The initial work on Project Reactor, a foundational reactive programming library for Java, began within Pivotal. It aimed to provide reactive extensions and an implementation of the Reactive Streams specification.

Significance

Reactor became the bedrock upon which Spring WebFlux would be built, providing the core reactive types (Mono and Flux) and operators necessary for non-blocking asynchronous programming in Spring.
