Release of Apache Hadoop

Inspired by Google's MapReduce and GFS papers, Doug Cutting released Apache Hadoop, a framework for distributed storage and processing of large datasets across clusters of computers.

Significance

Hadoop provided the first widely adopted, open-source solution for handling 'Big Data,' shifting the paradigm from 'scale up' to 'scale out' and becoming a foundational layer for many future data science initiatives.
