UNIX created (initial version)

Ken Thompson created the first version of UNIX (then called UNICS) on a discarded PDP-7 computer, mostly in assembly language, after Bell Labs pulled out of the Multics project.

Significance

This laid the groundwork for the operating system that C would later redefine and become inextricably linked with, creating the practical need for a language like C.
