Windows Azure Platform Launch

Microsoft officially launched its cloud computing platform, Windows Azure, making its first set of services generally available to customers.

Significance

This laid the foundational infrastructure upon which services like Traffic Manager would later be built, providing the global data center network and core compute/storage capabilities.
