X.500 Standard Published

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the X.500 series of recommendations, defining a global directory service. It was technically advanced but complex and relied on the OSI networking model.

Significance

Established the conceptual foundation and data model for hierarchical, distributed directory services, which LDAP would later simplify and adapt.
